Current Pathology Laboratory Computer Systems (LIMS) have
little or no capacity for capturing the histopathology data required
by the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) data in
a structured form. This represents a missed opportunity to
streamline the collection of this data and improve the accuracy of
the information collected.
Work to date
Following initial analysis and design work by AES Medical Ltd to unify the Royal College of Pathologists and BCSP pro-formas the PathoSys® bowel screening module was developed and integrated into the PathoSys® system.
Following initial feedback this module was then trialed by Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with feedback on improvements and amendments being fed back by the laboratory to AES Medical. Following this trial period and the work put in by the Yeovil laboratory the module has since been took up by East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.
Benefits
The PathoSys® bowel screening module affords its users the following benefits:
Easy look up of BCSP cases.
Automatic generation of read only BCSP pro-forma.
Easy subsequent retrieval of pro-forma’s for printing and export.
BCSP pathology data stored in a structured format for easy auditing and onward transmission.
Looking ahead….
Planned future improvements to the PathoSys® bowel screening module include:
Ongoing system user driven improvements to data entry and reporting.
