Go Live: PathoSys® goes live at the Pennine Acute NHS Trust in 2 Months

The PathoSys® system has now produced its first reports at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. From the initial implementation meeting held between AES and the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust to the first report being authorised has been only two months.

PathoSys® will initially provide reporting at The Royal Oldham Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital and Birch Hill Hospital (Rochdale). PathoSys® will continue to provide dataset cancer reporting once pathology services have been centralised at the £18 million ‘super-lab’ at the Royal Oldham Hospital. The building is due for completion in November 2007, and represents a key part of the move by the NHS to modernise pathology services across Oldham, Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton, Bury and North Manchester. The central Oldham lab will handle routine samples from both hospitals and GPs across the whole area, with urgent analysis done on site.

AES Medical would like to thank all the staff at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust for playing their part in the rapid implementation of PathoSys across the trust. We regard this as a particularly successful project, which would not have been possible without the professionalism of the staff at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Go Live: PathoSys® up and running at William Harvey Hospital

PathoSys® is now up and running at the William Harvey Hospital which is part of the East Kent Hospitals Trust.PathoSys® together with the iSoft iLab system provides cancer dataset reporting and rapid audit.

East Kent Hospitals Trust

The East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust was established on 1 April 1999, due to the merger of the three acute trusts in east Kent (The Kent and Canterbury Hospitals NHS Trust, The South Kent Hospitals NHS Trust and the Thanet Healthcare NHS Trust).

One of Englands largest hospital trusts, the East Kent Hospitals Trust runs five hospitals:

  • Kent and Canterbury in Canterbury
  • Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in Margate
  • William Harvey in Ashford
  • Buckland in Dover
  • Royal Victoria in Folkestone

William Harvey Hospital at Ashford is one of the three main hospitals in the East Kent Hospitals Trust area.

Commissioned in 1977 this hospital employs about 2,500 people. The site has been developed over the years to provide a diabetic outpatient centre in 1992, a mental health unit managed by East Kent NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust and rehabilitation centre in 1993, and a cancer care centre in 1996. 1998 saw the opening of the day surgery unit and a 24-bed orthopaedic ward.

The two years from July 2004 will see more building work and refurbishment at the hospital, as part of broader changes to hospital services in east Kent.

A new three-storey building will be built to house pathology (the laboratories where blood samples, etc are tested) and an expansion to the Special Care Baby Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and children

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust chooses PathoSys®

PathoSys® has been purchased by the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as part of its ongoing pathology modernisation. PathoSys® will provide cancer dataset reporting and audit for the trusts new amalgamated Labcentre system.

About The Trust

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust was established in April 2002 and manages hospitals in Bury, North Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale. Serving a population of approximately 800,000, the Trust is one of the largest non-teaching in the country.

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust employs a staff of 10,000 across five hospital sites:

  • Fairfield General Hospital, Bury
  • The Royal Oldham Hospital
  • Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale
  • Rochdale Infirmary
  • North Manchester General Hospital

The Trust headquarters is located on the Westhulme site in Oldham where a new £18 million ‘super-lab’ at the Royal Oldham Hospital is due for completion in November 2007.

Pathology

Pathology services have continued on their ambitious programme of modernisation with the development of a major business case to create a state-of-the-art network across the Trust.

Under this project, a major pathology centre would be created at The Royal Oldham Hospital, with essential service laboratories (ESLs) at each of the other sites. The ESLs would enable swift turnaround of time-sensitive samples.

The project is a response to pressures in relation to increasing demand, a national shortage of skilled staff and the need to use equipment to greatest advantage.

Derby Hospitals NHS Trust purchases PathoSys®

Advanced Expert Systems Ltd is pleased to announce that Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has procured the PathoSys® system as part of its £14.9m, eight-year managed service contract with iSoft to upgrade IT systems, in advance of the NHS National Programme for IT. The trust placed the contract to ensure that it would have an electronic system in place when it opened the new City General Hospital.

PathoSys® was installed in and is now available at the pathology laboratory in the newly developed super hospital on the Derby City General Hospital site. Staff training and interface development for the Legacy CILMS system is now complete. PathoSys® is in final customer testing and is expected to go live during the summer 2006.

About The Trust

The Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, the Derby City General Hospital (incorporating the Derbyshire Children’s Hospital), and the Nightingale Macmillan Continuing Care Unit.

The New Derby City Hospital

The Trust is currently building a brand new £333million super hospital on the Derby City General Hospital site. The new hospital is due for completion in 2008 and will provide the very latest in modern health care. It will incorporate the existing Derby Medical School, which is run in partnership with the University of Nottingham.

A number of clinics, wards and departments will transfer across to the new hospital building in May 2006, when the first phase of the construction will be completed.

PathoSys® first system recognised by The Royal College of Pathologists.

Advanced Expert Systems Ltd’s (AES Medical) PathoSys®, has become the first pathology cancer reporting and information management software system to be recognised by the Royal College of Pathologists.

PathoSys® is used in pathology laboratories for cancer reporting and minimum data set information collection.

The RCPath acknowledged that PathoSys® meets the standards set by the College, and have also licensed AES Medical to use the College’s coat of arms, data sets and guidelines within PathoSys®.

AES Medical PathoSys® is a cancer data collection and information management system that is quick and simple for pathologists to use. It generates reports that are laid out in a consistent and easily read format. PathoSys® collects all the minimum data set information in a highly structured way, enabling very detailed searches and comprehensive data export to organisations such as cancer registries and networks.

AES Medical’s Business Manager, said: “The Royal College’s recognition of PathoSys® is a very important acknowledgement of the hard work and expertise we have put into developing this software. We see it as the beginning of a long and successful relationship with the College and a major step towards our goal of improving cancer data collection and information management.”
